“The Primacy of the Interior Life in the Formation and Ministry of the Diaconate” in Archdiocese of Omaha

The heart of the diaconate is not found in service, but rather in intimate communion with Christ the Servant to whom the deacon was configured on the day of his ordination.  Sacred service, which is the deacon’s ministry, flows from this communion and is effective in proportion to the deacon’s love for Jesus Christ. Therefore the interior life, the life of sacred reading, of pious reflection, of deep prayer and of restful contemplation, must be continually cultivated. Deacon Dominic Cerrato, Ph.D., Program Director for the St. John Paul II Foundation, will present the main talks of a weekend retreat for deacon candidates and their wives in the Archdiocese of Omaha. The retreat will take place at Immaculata Monastery in Norfolk, Nebraska.

By the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, Jim and Joy have lived and proclaimed the Gospel of Life for over 35 years. The truth of the Incarnation -the "infleshment" of God with us in Jesus - has made a profound impact on their lives and has led them to live in radical solidarity with the pre-born, minorities and the disenfranchised. The Pinto's have been directly involved in many aspects of the Pro-life Movement. Currently, Joy serves as Executive Director and Jim as Director of Development at Her Choice Birmingham Women's Center, Birmingham, Alabama. The Pintos mobilize every resource possible to encourage mothers to choose life, protect children at risk and to offer post abortion healing.

The topic for this formation day is "Proclaiming God's Plan for Marriage in a Culture that Seeks to Redefine It." With the ongoing efforts to redefine marriage and the pressures placed on the faithful to embrace changes or remain silent before this cultural push, how are we called to proclaim God’s plan for marriage? What is the clergy’s role in countering these efforts effectively and with tenderness?

"Encountering the Shepherd's Heart" @ Assumption Seminary

Chris Stravitsch will bring our Shepherd's Heart initiative to Assumption Seminary in San Antonio as he directs the annual retreat for collegians and pre-theologians. The theme "Encountering the Shepherd's Heart" draws its inspiration from St. John Paul II's apostolic exhortation Pastores Dabo Vobis, which means "I will give you shepherds", and from every Christian's invitation to encounter the Good Shepherd. The week long retreat for seminarians will offer insights for encountering the Good Shepherd through St. Ignatius' Consciousness Examen and Rules for the Discernment of Spirits, examine obstacles to holiness, discuss stages in the spiritual life, and conclude with the mission of having the Shepherd's heart.

"Pope Francis on Encountering Christ as a Family and in Prayer" - Archdiocese of San Antonio

Nearly 4,000 clergy, religious and laity will gather with the Most Reverend Gustavo Garcia-Siller, Archbishop of San Antonio for "The Assembly 2015: Encountering Christ". The aim is to further implement their archdiocesan Pastoral Vision. Chris Stravitsch will give two breakout session presentations focusing on how families can fulfill the universal call to holiness and how clergy can respond to the pastoral challenges facing families today.

The first is "Pope Francis on Encountering Christ as a Family and in Prayer" - Pope Francis is a person of deep prayer, who encounters Christ daily as he contemplates the Gospels. Some of the fruit of his prayer has included profound reflections on both family and prayer, at times even bringing these two topics together. This presentation will highlight some of Pope Francis’ key themes and comments on family and prayer, by drawing from his various homilies, addresses, and writings.

"Together in Holiness: Teaching Couples How to Pray and Encounter Christ in the Home" - Archdiocese of San Antonio

The second presentation that Chris will give at the Assembly 2015 is about teaching couples how to pray.

Saint John Paul II taught that families have a “priestly mission” that includes living a life of prayer together in the home—husband and wife together, parents and children together. Yet, most spouses do not pray outside of the Mass and would likely say they do not know how. As the bishops explore pastoral care in the evangelization of families, it is appropriate for us to examine how pastoral ministers can guide couples and families to encounter Christ together. This presentation will offer practical guidance for meeting this pastoral need and will equip participants for teaching couples how to pray together. Three areas will be addressed: simplicity in prayer, incorporating the Church’s forms of prayer, and encountering Christ in the Sacred Scriptures

The Archdiocese of Omaha, Nebraska has commissioned The St. John Paul II Foundation to offer a 2-year cycle of our Shepherd's Heart initiative. The ongoing education and formation program will be offered to the permanent deacons and their wives.

The topic for this formation day is “Proclaiming the Good News of Marriage and the Family”. There is an “absolute necessity that the ‘new evangelization’ have priests as its initial ‘new evangelizers’” (St. John Paul II). With a waning appreciation for the beauty of marriage and increasing acceptance of cohabitation, how do we evangelize our parishioners and reclaim a culture of marriage within our parish communities so that more couples choose marriage rather than cohabitation?
